Mulch beds look great for about one season. After that, you're dealing with weeds pushing through, old mulch breaking down, and the same cycle of cleanup every single fall. It adds up fast - both in time and money.

Here's what we did for this property. We cleared out the weeds and old mulch completely, then installed rock throughout the beds. Around the house foundation and along the waterfront area, the rock gives everything a clean, finished look that holds up without the constant upkeep mulch demands.

The difference rock makes over the long run is real. It doesn't decompose, it doesn't wash away as easily, and it cuts way down on the weeding. For a lakefront property like this one, that's a big deal - you want to be spending time on the water, not pulling weeds out of your beds every weekend.

We also made sure the edging was set cleanly to keep that sharp line between the rock and the lawn. That detail matters. Without a solid border, rock beds start to look messy fast. Getting it right upfront means less fixing later.

If your beds are tired and you're done re-mulching every year, a rock reset is worth considering. It's a straightforward upgrade that genuinely pays off in less work, season after season.
